The process of floor sanding basically involves removing the top layer of any kind of wooden floor, say timer or hardwood by using abrasive tools and materials. The floors that can be sanded using this procedure include cork and particleboard along with some kinds of parquet too. The sanding procedure is done to ensure that the old layers of the floors are taken off methodically, without causing damage to the floor.
There are some kinds of floors that are especially made to enhance sanding. In some of the older floor types, floor sanding used to be done quite frequently to bring back the old texture and also to increase the longevity of the floor. There are three stages to this:

This is also known was the preparation stage of the floor sanding process. In this all kinds of nails that tend to protrude or come out of the board are punched down. These nail tend to cause a lot of damage to the machines. In such cases, many experts use staples or even tucks. This helps to fasten the previous nails or other coverings that may cause potential damage to the machine. There is a variation of adhesives used to help cover these also. Though some are easily removable, there are many that may require use of adhesives such as log papers. There are cases where sanding is not possible at all because of the preparation process not being completed smoothly.
The second step of the process includes the sanding itself. Once the basic preparation of floor sanding is done, only then can sanding start. This is how the procedure goes:
- A primary cut is made using coarse-grit papers that help in removal of older coatings along with making the floor flatter for a smoother finish.
- Larger sanders are then used for the graining of the timber. Usually a 40 grit paper is used for the first cut or primary cut process.
- If any of the areas are not reachable by the larger sanders, then an edger is used. This is done with the same grit paper like the other flooring.
- All kinds of filling and holing are done at this stage of floor sanding. For this, 80 grit papers are used and the process of second cut commences.
- Over here, a belt sander is put to use and is sync with the grain of timber used in the cut. The finishing machine is then put to use for preparing the final finish. Using a grit paper, the finish is sealed off. The grit here is usually 100-150 grit papers.
Sealing the floor
The task does not end here. It is vital for adding a protective sealant here because there are chances of damage to the floor. The floor sanding process is completed using different kinds of sealants like oils, polyurethane, etc. It should be kept in mind that the oil based ones are highly poisonous. They have volatile organic elements that thus the entire task must be executive with caution along with the use of a mask.
